How do you know if someone is the right person for you?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerThere's no single sign, but you generally feel safe, respected, and like yourself around them. You also share core values and can handle conflict together.

Signs it might be right

You feel emotionally and physically safe, not anxious or on edge. You can be honest without fearing punishment or withdrawal of affection.

You share fundamental values about money, family, fidelity, and how to spend free time. Differences in hobbies matter less than differences in ethics.

You handle disagreements without contempt, stonewalling, or name-calling. You can repair after a fight and both feel heard.

You like who you become around them: more yourself, not smaller or more guarded.

  • You feel calm and secure, not obsessed or uncertain.
  • You can disagree and still feel connected.
  • You share long-term goals and dealbreakers.
  • You trust them when they're not with you.
  • Your friends and family see you happy, not stressed.

What doesn't prove it

Intense chemistry or a whirlwind start doesn't guarantee long-term fit. Early intensity can fade, and what remains is compatibility and kindness.

A long history together doesn't mean it's right if you're unhappy or repeatedly hurt. Time invested is not a reason to stay.

Feeling like you can 'fix' them or that they'll change for you is a red flag, not a sign of destiny.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking there's one soulmate: many people could be a good partner; it's about choosing and building.
  • Confusing anxiety for love: butterflies from uncertainty are not the same as secure attachment.
  • Ignoring dealbreakers because the good times are really good: patterns matter more than peaks.
